Title: Lola Rose
Author: Jaqueline Wilson
Illustrator: Nick Sharrot
Question 1.) What is good about this book?
I like this book because its not your average girl book: girly with a happy storyline. This story is more deep and moving. It contains a few illustrations at each chapter, good characters and heart-pumping situations. Some examples for these are:
* Good Characters : Mum ( Victoria Luck ) ~ Mum is a flirtatious, fun and spare-of-the-moment kind of person. But at times can be a bit daft. This character gives the story very effective twists and turns.
* Heart-pumping situations : ( out of text )
” It was a slap across my face that lifted me right off my feet. I ended up flat on my back on the carpet. Mum leapt at Dad, scratching his face with her long nails. He punched her and then when she was on the ground beside me he kicked her. Then he spat at both of us and walked out. The door slamed behind him.”
2.) Describe one of the characters.
Harpreet Gabrie: Harpreet is a minor character and is also Lola Roses’ friend. She is outgoing, helpful and a bit dozey. I do like Harpreet because even though she is 10 years old she can act younger or older than she is depending on the situation.
* Supporting examples.
Outgoing ~ “She was grinning at me.” & ”She came up to me at playtime.”
Helpful ~ “We sat next to each other in class and helped each other with all our work. She was brilliant at Maths and IT and science. I’m OK at English and better at art so it worked a treat.”
Dozey ~ “What about his body?” said Harpreet, who didn’t quite get it.” Basically the idea is pretty simple to understand.
3.) Explain what type of book this is and what type of people you think would like it.
Genre ( type of book ) : Family Drama because it’s a definate drama that surrounds a family.
Audience ( type of reader ) : Probably people who want a change from the ordinary or people who like deep stories.
This book has 24 chapters and is recommended for older audiences.

Title: Twenties Girl
Author: Sophie Kinsella
Cover Illustration: Lucy Truman at New Division
Question 1.) What is good about this book?
I like this book because the author has decided on a good storyline that’s addictive and hilarious. She has succeeded her hopes throughout the story. When she wanted me to laugh, I laughed, when she wanted me to become sad, I did and when the main character became worried, so did I. This story
contains romance, new ideas and sad dilemmas.
* Romance : In this story Lara ( main character ) and Ed (Sadie’s’ (ghost) crush ) become close and sparks start to fly round the middle of the book. This makes the story part romantic part awkward, which only makes it more intriguing.
* New ideas : The Author has given a new idea that when a ghost (Sadie) yells loudly into the livings ears the living think that it’s the voice inside their head but in reality it’s a ghost.
* Sad Dilemmas : (Out of text)
…My voice raises. ‘I mean, why did you take a job here if you weren’t interested in this place? What were you planning to do? ‘I was planning to explore it with my Fiancée,’ Ed says calmly. His answer slightly takes the wind out of my sails.
Fiancée? What Fiancée?
‘Until she broke it off with me, a week before we were due to come,’ Ed continues conversationally. ‘She asked her company to transfer her London placement to someone else. So you see, I had a dilemma. Come to England, stay focused and do the best I could, or stay in Boston, knowing I’d see her almost every day. She worked in the same building as me.’ He pauses a second, before adding, ‘And her lover.”
Question 2.) Describe a character in the story.
Lara. Lara is the main character and is delusional, strong-minded and a bit slow. I do like this character because of her different ways and emotions, it gives the story good levels of humor, twists and turns.
* Delusional : In this story she thinks her ex-boyfriend is still in love with her as she is with him. Because of this she makes Sadie yell in his ear by saying
” You still love her! You still love Lara!”
So he gets back together with her.
* Strong-minded: (out of text)
” ‘I’m in your hands,’ says Ed. ‘I don’t know this area.’
This not-knowing-London is really starting to annoy me.
‘Is there any area you do know?’
‘I know my route to work.’ Ed shrugs
‘I know the park opposite my building. I know my way to Whole Foods.’ OK I’ve had it. How dare he come to this great city and show zero interest in it? ‘Don’t you think that’s really narrow-minded and arrogant?’ I stop dead. ‘Don’t you think if you come and live in a city you should respect it enough to get to know it? London is one of the most fascinating, historic, amazing cities in the world! And bloody Whole foods! That’s an American shop! Couldn’t you try Waitrose?’ My voice rises. ‘I mean, why did you take a job here if you weren’t interested in this place? What were you planning to do?
* Bit slow: She’s at this funeral for her Great-Aunt and while she’s talking to her Uncle Bill she starts to hear music and thinks that it’s already started. She rushes in and about 5 minutes into it she realizes it’s the wrong one. When she leaves she bumps into her parents and a lady who works at the crematorium and the ask why she was in there she replies by saying –
” I got lost! I didn’t know where to go! You should put signs on the door!” The lady then points to a sign.
Question 3.) Explain what type of book this is and what type of people you think would like it.
Genre: (type of book) Romance/Adventure.
There’s love triangles and a search for a necklace.
Audience: (People who would like it) I’m thinking a mature age because of language and scenes. But apart from that maybe people who are into the type of genre and probably whoever like humorous ghost stories.
