Some Great Writing!

Here is a selection of some great pieces of writing from Room 1.  Our focus for these was to include descriptive detail from our five senses, to include our thoughts and feelings and to use descriptive adjectives and verbs so it makes it more interesting to read.  I think these three girls have done a great job.  (If you click the pieces of writing it will make it larger and easier to read)

Figuring out Probability

We have been calculating probability in class this week. This is one of the groups explaining how to calculate probability to solve a problem.

Occy the Octopus

occy

A while ago we all took a vote on what our classroom mascot should be.  A mascot being something that represented our class and something that we could throw around and take photos of in different places.  Occy the Octopus was the Champion.  BUT we have forgotten what things the legs represented.  SO, can you please post down ideas of what the legs on Occy could represent, things that are important to our classroom.

Two page spread!!

We have just had a great write-up in the Stratford Press about the stuff we are doing at Matapu.  Here is a snippet…

Have a Hangi…Matapu Style…

hangi2  hangi3 hangi4

We have recently held a Hangi for a fundraiser for our school camp and to help with other school expenses.  The stones were piping hot when we put the food down and the steam from the wet towels and sacks was really, really…steamy!

We had to make a LOT of dinners with the Hangi food and there were a LOT of hands helping out.  Special thanks to everyone who turned up on the day and to those who helped with providing us with food and equipment, and to those who organised this event.  It was a great fundraiser and it was great to have so much help!!

More tree planting…

One thing we seem to do a lot of is tree planting!!!  We have just planted another 100 trees along our fence line in the hopes of creating a bit more shelter.  Now we just have to wait for them to grow…

Special visitors

india

As part of our World Theme we had a few special visitors.  Can you guess where they are from?

World theme

At the moment we are looking at different things to do with other countries.  If you look in our theme page you can see just what things we are investigating.  Part of our learning involved reflecting back on things we can improve on.  One of those things was to improve our organisation, so we tried to plan more thoroughly at the beginning of our research this time.  We used these planning sheets to make sure our research was focussed and everyone had a job to do.

Heritage movies…

This is one of our projects about NZ Heritage we finished last term. Check out others on our Theme page on this blog!!!

Multiplication strategy…

This is Anita explaining a multiplication strategy we have been discussing in class.  Her group can use this to find out the answer to some pretty tough questions…

Space challenge…

jarad astronaut

You are a member of a space crew originally scheduled to meet up with a mother ship on the lighted side of the moon.  However, due to mechanical problems, your ship was forced to land on a spot 320km from the meeting point.  During re-entry and landing much of the equipment on board was damaged and since survival depends on meeting the mother ship, only the most critical items must be chosen for the 320km trip.

Below are 15 items left intact and undamaged after landing.  Your task is to rank them in order of importance.  Place the most important item at number 1, the second most important at 2 and so on, with the least important at 15.  Read the items carefully and don’t forget you are on the moon!

We will get our experts to calcuate your points once people have posted their answers.  We have the official list compiled by NASA where we will calculate the difference between where you rank the items and where they are ranked in the answers.

See if you can beat Mr C!!!!!!!  Any parents are more than welcome to post their answers.
15 Items…
Box of matches
Portable heating unit
Self inflating raft
2×50kg oxygen tanks

Creating Clay…

We have just spent a few Fridays creating some clay models, bowls and animals.  Here are some pictures of how we fired our clay in a kiln that we created at school.  As you can see by the pictures of some of our creations, it could have done with a little more time in the kiln.  A few of them didn’t quite come out how they went in, but we had a great time creating and firing them!!!

Welcome back to Term 2…

Welcome back everyone to term 2, 2010. We have heaps going on this term as we continue our theme by looking at different places around the world. Really looking forward to that!

In the meantime, here is some math work for some groups. Check out these problems this morning for maths and see how you go. You can work in pairs, but I will be asking each of you to show me how you work out these problems, so make sure you both know how to work them out!!

New Header Needed…

You may have noticed something different about our blog…namely the header picture is gone.  That was last year, this is 2010, so we need your ideas for a new header for Room 1 – 2010.  It really needs to be something that is significant to our school and classroom and it must contain you!!!

Email me your pictures and the winning picture will win huge amounts of house points.

New things on our blog!

I have been adding some new pages recently, specifically to do with our spelling, theme and writing

One of our spelling groups is working on developing their vocabulary with learning a new word a week, then finding out synonyms and antonyms for that word, as well as using them in sentences.

Our new theme page will keep you up to date with our Inquiry Learning projects as they happen.  Look forward to some new videos up there in the next few weeks about our heritage

Also, I will be selecting some great pieces of writing to showcase on our writing page, where we are looking at writing for a purpose, specifically to set the scene at the moment by using the five senses

We are also going to look at a library report where the students chose a book they are reading to write about.  So if you are bored with the books you are reading at home you can check out that page to get some great ideas of books to read!
