Careers Unit…

Published by MrC under Uncategorized

We have just finished our Inquiry on different careers, where the students in Room 1 had to find out about how to get a job in different industries.  They found out information like the skills involved, subjects in High School to take and courses in University that they would need to take.  We had directions about how to get jobs as farmers, nurses, meteorologists, photographers and all sorts!!!

Now that we have finished our projects, we need to evaluate how well we did.  Follow this link and answer these questions as best you can…

Colour Poetry

Published by MrC under Uncategorized

Hi everyone!!  These poems HAVE to have a mention!  We are doing poetry in class at the moment and we had to choose a colour and then create a poem that describes some unusual objects of that colour.   I think these turned out great!  Well done everyone with your bizarre objects you included in your poems!

We have just had a very busy camp for the Year 7 & 8’s in Wellington.  Needless to say, I spent a lot of time in the following weekend sleeping.  Here are some comments we have made about camp.  Thanks to the huge help of the parents who came and I hope it was all worth it!!!!

Here is the link to have a look at our favourite things on camp.

Appreciation day!!!

Published by MrC under Uncategorized

We have had recently had a spelling test that included the word appreciation.  This sparked some conversation which ended in a homework assignment for Room 1 students to say to their parents and caregivers

“I appreciate everything you do for me.”

What was the result???

Term 4 – Poetry

Published by MrC under Uncategorized

Wow, where does the time go?  Already we are in week 4 of term 4, almost nearing the end of the year and so much more to do!!!

So far this term we have been writing poetry, beginning with limericks (which are short, sharp pieces of poetry designed for humour)  Here are a couple of examples that the students have come up with so far…

There was a rabbit named Hare
Who never did nothing but glare
Then cried his mum
“I’m cross with you son,
because it’s always rude to stare!”

There was a chocolate called Crunch
Who had a friend called Sponge
But then one day
They were taken away
And both were eaten for lunch!

Your task Room 1 is to finish this limerick…(don’t forget the rhyme and rhythm patterns)

There was a young man from Norway…

Author – Dawn McMillan – Visits Matapu!

Published by MrC under Uncategorized

We were really lucky to have Dawn McMillan visit our school on Friday. Dawn has written some picture book treasures like Why do Dogs Sniff Bottoms, Where do flies go in winter? Pancake Attack! A Fishing Story, and my favourite Glasseye Creek, amongst many others.

Dawn spoke to us about where she came up with her ideas and gave us some great insights on what it takes to become a great writer.
Thanks Dawn for a great afternoon and we are looking forward to your next book!

Some great constellations…

Published by MrC under Uncategorized

We have been researching constellations that are related to our star signs in Room 1 and here are some of the great work that we have created. Check out our student blogs for more!  I thought Logan’s and Jade’s was particularly good because they have used their own words really well when re-writing their information into their power point.  Kate and Ella have done a great job having a go at putting their information onto videos.

Also Room 1, I have a question for you. Can you explain what a Sidereal year and a Tropical year is, and describe the difference? I will give out 2000 HPS for the BEST answer (This will take more than just a couple of sentences!) CLUE: You need to discuss the equinox and solstice in your answers for a tropical year.

See more Audio at TeacherTube.com.

For our options every week we are doing some sort of art activity.  In Room 1 we are looking at making some music and this is what Kakariki House created.  Not bad for 20 minutes!!!!  You other houses have a great standard to uphold!
